The environment is often cited as the greatest adversary in cold, austere operations. Extreme cold temperatures expose military forces and equipment to unpredictable and dangerous levels of risk and can have catastrophic effects on end-user devices (EUDs), including significantly diminished battery life, temporary usability issues, and irreversible damage in short-term exposure. For batteries, electronics and communications there is often no effective way to warm batteries in the field, and missions can be dramatically shortened or compromised.
