Winter Warfare Solutions Now!

Cold weather operations impact every aspect of military doctrine, including training, equipping, sustaining, casualty treatment, and evacuation.

Exposure to cold weather negatively impacts Warfighter performance and often causes catastrophic damage to batteries and electronics – putting mission objectives, duration, communications, and even lives at risk. There are currently no existing low SWaP-C technologies to protect and provide relief from such exposure – until now!

Our initial transitioned electronics product, the EUD Support System, has been proven to significantly extend mission duration by keeping batteries, electronics and Warfighters operating effectively and continuously in extreme cold conditions - down to minus 40 degrees - while providing advanced power management and conversion capabilities within the same form factor.

Integration Capable = Multiple Applications!

Working with multiple NATO and U.S. Warfighters CSi designed and manufactured this versatile all-weather product as a COMPONENT that can be integrated into multiple existing products within the same form factor, including:

  • EUDs;

  • Radios;

  • Drones;

  • Snowmobiles;

  • Multiple batteries (as a heater);

  • Medical/Casualty products;

  • Man-Wearable applications;

  • And more!

Now available in NATO through Precision Technic Defence (https://ptdefence.com/)

UNDENIABLE FACTS:

  • The battlefield is becoming increasingly electrified;

  • Geopolitical pressures are forcing Allies away from traditional battery manufacturers (Sec 154, 2024 NDAA);

    • There is no short-term battery replacement;

    • Innovation and transition to alternatives is slow and expensive;

  • There is a growing logistical challenge associated with the Arctic Strategy;

  • There are increasing defense budget pressures forcing hard choices across the board

    Allied warfighters must get more out of their equipment than ever before.

    Our mission: We believe that while long-term power solutions are in development (including our own), improving current batteries and electronics performance is the best near-term solution to the growing battlefield electrical needs.

ExposureWear by Carver Scientific, Inc.

Carver Scientific, Inc. (CSi) is a technology development company focused in two specific areas: 1) innovative materials, processes and energy technologies that will bring transformative change to the way electricity is generated, managed and stored; and 2) low SWaP-C electronic heating and power modules that that are integration-capable with multiple currently-fielded battery powered End User Devices (EUDs) which MUST OPERATE in the most extreme cold and austere environments.

CSi has developed (and continues to develop) both technologies under multiple DoD Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards; co-funded NATO-USSOCOM technology sprints; joint development programs; private funds; and sales. Our near-term heating and power solutions are being developed under the name of “ExposureWear, Inc. (EW) by Carver Scientific, Inc.”

Our heating and power solutions maintain internal battery temperatures and charging capabilities to minus 40C and have have been used in multiple cold weather exercises throughout the US, Canada, and NATO; have passed multiple third-party tests (including civilian, MIL-STD 810G and NATO SOF extreme testing); have been used in actual law enforcement operations; and have now transitioned in NATO and are available for purchase through our distribution partners. Depending upon the end use product, TRLs range from 4-9 for heaters and power modules; and 2-3 for energy technologies. Joint development efforts are underway for additional product development and integration efforts with multiple US and NATO-based manufacturers.

Our PROVEN Achievements:

  • Enhanced Mission Duration and Capabilities in multiple cold weather field exercises;

    extreme testing; and actual police operations! Transitioned in NATO ‘24.

  • Increased Communications Reliability.

  • Improved Power & Efficiency Performance.

  • Man-Wearable: Mitigate the Effects of Cold Weather - postpone cognitive decline;

    postpone/prevent loss of dexterity; avoid possible long-term health impacts

Man-Wearable Need

Even short-term exposure can result in the loss of dexterity, mental clarity, and can greatly diminish a Warfighter’s abilities, leading to long-term damage and even death. Maintaining sufficient body temperature is a matter of life and death!

Our low SWaP-C targeted man-wearable heating solution helps sustain Warfighter performance and increase mission duration while mitigating cold weather effects in the most extreme conditions.

Equipment Need

Exposure to extreme cold can have catastrophic effects on end-user devices (EUDs), including significantly degraded battery life, temporary usability issues, and irreversible damage over time. For many applications there is often no effective way to keep internal battery temperatures warm enough to sustain operations - which can lead to dramatically shortened or compromised missions.

Power Need

Operational energy is the lifeblood of the modern battlefield. And, the battlefield is rapidly becoming more electrified. Yet, there is an over-reliance on manufacturers who dominate critical markets, and pose significant supply chain, cybersecurity, economic and national security risks.

Beginning in 2027 the US Department of Defense can no longer purchase batteries from “countries of concern.” Many of our Allies have also taken similar action. But, developing and fielding new (and replacement), low SWaP-C clean energy generation, storage and harvesting technologies is a long and expensive process. The Need is Now! Solutions are Here!

We were working perimeter on a barricaded individual. The weather was frigid - snow with consistent wind . . . I was struggling to keep my hands dry and warm. A colleague offered me the opportunity to use the heated chest pack, which was a game changer! Not only did it heat my upper body, but it allowed me to alternate shoving a hand in my vest to warm them up.”
— US Marshal Service Supervisor, JAN ’23.

Our heating products are made of lightweight (less than 1 oz), self-regulated (i.e., safe), low power printed electronic Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heaters that provide targeted, rapid warmth for man-wearable and battery/electronic End User Devices (EUDs). Our EUD Power & Data cables significantly improves performance and efficiency of many existing EUDs, including batteries and electronics, without increasing form factor.

One Technology - Multiple Uses

Our products have been tested and proven in multiple extreme cold weather exercises, passed third party tests (including civilian and MIL-STD 810G) and successfully used in multiple law enforcement operations. In April ‘24 our EUD Support System (combination of heating and power & data cables) successfully passed extreme NATO Special Operations Forces (SOF) testing and are now being sold and delivered to multiple NATO units. (The U.S. DoD does not currently have written requirements for extreme cold weather solutions.)

Who we’ve worked with.

We take pride in working closely with end-users to provide capabilities to enhance currently fielded battery-operated

We got our start as a US Department of Defense (DOD) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) company funded by multiple awards to develop our cooling, heating and energy technologies. SBIR funding agencies include AFRL/AFSOC, ONR, AFWERX and OSD. Non-SBIR government funders include a joint USSOCOM/NATO technology sprint that resulted in passing NATO SOF extreme testing carried out by the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) and NATO product transition in 2024.

Additional joint development efforts were funded by private companies.

We have worked closely with many international military and civilian units, research labs (US and NATO) and private companies representing a broad range of specialties including: Tier 1, 2 and 3 units; federal, state and local police departments; medical teams; extreme outdoor training/equipment manufacturers; drone manufacturers; battery companies; and more.

Our products have been tested and demonstrated in multiple field exercises, experimentations (including JIFX, TE SOCOM, NATO, ICE-PPR, Thunderstorm (medical)), and other events.  Other groups and SMEs we have worked with include: The Ohio State Highway Patrol Special Response Team; multiple federal, state and local law enforcement and medical teams;
